Tu as Ubuntu en 32 bits là non ?
En 32 bits on ne peut avoir plus de 3,6 Gio de RAM, pour utiliser les 8Gio, il te faut donc passé au 64 bits et il me semble que tu peux.

Il faut que tu installes un système 64bit (AMD64)
La limitation est fait par ton système qui est en 32bit (x86) et qui, par conséquent, ne sais pas gérer plus de 3Go de RAM, comme signalé dans ton lshw :

Non, c'est très simple. Tu effaces tout et tu fais une nouvelle installation d'Ubuntu en 64 bits.

Non, pas de différences visibles.
Quoique certains ont des problèmes de Flash et/ou pilotes alors que moi je n'ai pas ces problèmes.

La différence entre 32 et 64bits est uniquement "sous le capot" ... rien de visible pour l'utilisateur qui pourra avoir les mêmes applications quelle que soit la version.
La seule solution pour passer de l'un à l'autre est la réinstallation avec un liveCD 64bits ... Pas plus compliqué que l'installation en 32bits, du coup.
Après, si tu as fait des paramétrages de logiciels particuliers, il serait bon que tu puisses conserver ton home.
- Si il est sur une partition isolé, il suffit de passer par le partitionnement manuel à l'installation et demander à ce que le point de montage de la partition de ton home soit toujours /home mais ne pas la formater et formater la partition dédiée à / en lui donnant le point de montage adéquate. Ton home sera alors intact.
- Si ton home n'est pas sur une partition isolée, sauvegarde son contenu (y compris les fichiers cachés) sur un disque dur externe et fais ta réinstallation en séparant le home (ou pas ... c'est comme tu le sens mais il est préférable d'avoir une partition /home séparée pour simplifier les manœuvres de réinstallation, même si l'objectif premier est de ne pas avoir recours à la réinstallation). Tu pourras alors récupérer tes données et les configurations de logiciels au cas par cas en filtrant les trucs utiles dans les dossiers cachés.

Pour être bien certain de ce que je vais faire.
Ne serait-il pas plus intéressant pour moi (et plus simple), de faire une mise à jour vers une version plus récente que 10.04 Lucid ? Ainsi, en même temps que je fais le passage à la 64bits je fais une mise à jour vers une version plus récente.....
Pour être certain : le passage de l'un à l'autre est-ce une installation toute neuve qui écrase tout ou bien est-ce comme une mise à jour ?
Merci de m'éclairer car j'ai toujours des réticences à faire des passages d'une version à une autre...

Ca va être "une installation toute neuve qui écrase tout". C'est pour ça que je te parlais de la conservation de /home.
Pour ce qui est du choix de rester en 10.04 ou de prendre une version plus récente, c'est à toi de voir. La version 10.04 est une version LTS qui a un vécu lui assurant une grande stabilité aujourd'hui. Le fait de prendre une version plus récente te donnera accès à des logiciels plus à jour mais un OS moins éprouvé (donc moins stable, dans une certaine mesure, même si ça sera tout de même stable).
Il faut que tu saches que l'interface de la version 11.04 par défaut a changé pour unity, interface qui sera conservée pour les versions suivantes (un retour à l'interface de bureau que tu connais avec la 10.04 est possible via l'écran de connexion).

Je ne conserverais pas le home. Juste sauvegarder les données.
Comme le home contient des paramètres de configuration, j'aurais peur d'un problème du au passage en 64 bits.

Si tu désires être tranquille jusqu'en 2013, optes pour la version 10.04.

Globalement les éléments de config du home ne touchent pas à des choses sensibles pour un passage de 32 à 64bits (c'est juste de l'interfaçage et de la personnalisation).
Mais c'est vrai que, par prudence, il vaut mieux faire un tri pour ne conserver que des dossiers de config très spécifiques dont on est sûr qu'ils ne posent pas de souci comme .mozilla pour conserver les favoris et extensions de Firefox ou .fonts pour conserver des polices ajoutées, et, par extrême prudence, on ne conservera pas de dossiers/fichiers de config pour être sûr de ne pas faire de connerie

Chacun son idée mais comme je me méfie, je ne garde rien du home si ce n'est les données.

J'ai eu tellement de blagues, que ce soit avec Windows (environ 20 ans d'utilisation) ou Ubuntu (environ 6 ans d'utilisation) en changeant de version que je ne conserve plus que mes données.

Donc, je reviens pour vous dire où j'en suis.
J'ai d'abord testé la version "pae" (ici) qui permet de gérer en 32 bits, 8Go de ram. C'était bien mais sans plus. Alors, j'ai fait le grand saut : formatage après sauvegarde du home entier pour pouvoir reprendre ensuite les données.
Résultat : un ubuntu 64 bits en 11.04 (affichage classique) qui gère mes 8Go et prend bien mieux en compte le dualcore que j'avais.
Donc parfait.
