[Résolu] forcer résolution écran (pilote libre radeon et carte ATI AGP

Salut

sur une vieille machine (ex windows XP) qui vient de basculer sous Lubuntu 12.4
je n'arrive pas à obtenir la résolution 1280x960 qui était utilisée sous windows avec un CRT 4/3 17 pouces

aucune trace du fichier xorg.conf

mais le fichier /var/log/Xorg.0.log me fait penser que ca pourrait venir du pilote radeon

étonnament ce fichier contient une liste de résolution standard 4/3
1600x1200
1024x768
832x624
...
mais NE contient PAS la 1280x960 standard 4/3
et fait référence à la place à la 1280x1024 !!!

j'étais tenté d'utiliser le pilote proprio AMD mais j'ai vu ici http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/catalyst
qu'il n'était plus compatible avec le nouveau noyaux

?? que me conseillez vous pour avoir accés à cette résolution 1280x960

Lance Pilotes additionnels et active les pilotes propriétaires ATI s'il t'en propose.

Si Pilotes additionnels ne te propose pas de pilotes propriétaires ATI, c'est mal barré avec cette vieille carte graphique.


OS: Ubuntu 22.04 64 bits + Windows 11 64 bits en dualboot (BIOS UEFI, Secure Boot activé et table de partitions GPT)

La Radeon 9200 n'est plus supportée par le pilote proprio depuis Ubuntu 9.04.

C'est d'ailleurs expliqué dans le second message épinglé dans ce forum («  [IMPORTANT] Cartes ATI et pilote proprio sur Jaunty/Karmic »). La 9200 n'est pas listée mais est antérieure à la 9500 en tête de liste, alors...

Pour le fichier xorg.conf absent, c'est normal, il n'est plus utilisé par défaut depuis au moins 3 ans sous Ubuntu. Il faut alors en créer un, c'est expliqué comment dans la doc xorg, mais je n'ai pas les connaissances pour t'aider sur le contenu à y mettre.

Non, ce n'est pas tout-à-fait vrai.

- C'est vrai si tu utilises les pilotes graphiques libres.

- Ce n'est pas vrai si tu utilises les pilotes graphiques propriétaires. Ceux-ci crée un fichier xorg.conf.

Il faut plutôt se demander, pourquoi les pilotes propriétaires utilisent encore le fichier xorg.conf !

Peut-être que c'est une réminiscence de Windows.....

Je pense que ATI et Nvidia sont peu intéressés à moderniser le code de leurs pilotes propriétaires. Par exemple, mon pilote Nvidia ne peut pas afficher la pleine résolution de mon écran 1080P pendant l'amorçage (alors qu'il n'avait pas de problème avec mon ancien 1920x1200), j'ai de grosses bandes noires en haut/en bas et sur les côtés, or le pilote libre n'a aucun problème à afficher la pleine résolution de 1920x1080.

Et ça risque de pas être jojo quand Ubuntu passera sous Wayland, Nvidia n'a aucune intention d'adapter son code à ce serveur graphique moderne... hmm

C'est un peu le problème.

Et personnellement, si je veux jouer sous Ubuntu j'ai besoin des pilotes graphiques propriétaires nVidia ou AMD/ATI suivant le PC.

j'avais raté le post-it ATI car j'avais vu "jaunty/karmic" et ne pensais donc pas être concerné ...

Ou bien tu peux regarder du côté des "xorg crack pushers" sur Launchpad, qui proposent plusieurs dépôts PPA avec des paquets de pilotes graphiques plus récents.

P.S. Y a que dans le PPA "xorg-edgers fresh X crack" qu'on trouve un pilote ati récent (16 août) mais c'est très expérimental comme dépôt, donc à utiliser en toute connaissance de cause...

mais comme c'est un "bête" soucis de résolution pour une machine simple (bureautique/internet)
et pas de rendu graphique/jeux
je vais regarder avant du coté de xrandr si j'arrive à forcer tout simplement la résolution utilisées

première "demi-dalle" OK
xrandr permet effectivement de rajouter une résolution
mais je me repencherai plus tard sur les histoires de pilotes quand j'aurai plus de temps

le man de xrandr est un peu "raide" si, comme moi,  on ne connait pas toutes les subtilités du hardware vidéo
mais on y trouve une petite ligne qui conseille d'utiliser cvt pour déterminer les paramètres complets

je suis reparti de l'ancienne config de la machine sous windows XP soit 1280x960 a 75.0 Mhz
pour lancer cvt

cvt 1280 960 75.0 

==>
# 1280x960 74.86 Hz (CVT 1.23M3) hsync: 75.23 kHz; pclk: 130.00 MHz
Modeline "1280x960_75.00"  130.00  1280 1368 1504 1728  960 963 967 1005 -hsync +vsync

qui donne le parametrage necessaire pour xrandr ==>

sans oublier pour créer le mode dans la liste des sélections

xrandr --addmode VGA-0 "1280x960"

on peut tester directement avec
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode "1280x960"
pour changer le mode sans devoir passer par le menu des préférences vidéo

avec le résultat final

xrandr permet de forcer "à la volée pour tester"  mais ne mémorise pas la config
je continue à creuser la doc...

suite de mes tests et lectures

a priori ce soucis de résolution se rencontre beaucoup avec les vieux écrans cathodiques CRT
car leurs réponses aux demandes d'info du système pour les identifier ne sont pas très homogénes
(selon constructeur, ancienneté, firmware...)
d'ou des erreurs assez fréquentes dans l'identification de certaines résolutions voire d'autres paramètres plus sensibles (fréquences...)  de ces écrans
il ne s'agit pas de bugs dans les procédures de détection auto des outils xorg  (cf fichier /var/log/Xorg.0.log pour recap de l'identification)


il y a 2 endroits ou on peut mettre ce genre de script qui reprendrait les commandes xrandr

*** dans le home de chaque utilisateur avec un fichier ~/.xprofile
mais ca peut perturber certains affichages de démarrage
(et il faut le refaire pour chaque user...)

*** dans les scripts de lancement initiaux de KDM ou GDM
je n'ai pas testé mais pour KDM c'est sensé être dans /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup
et pour GDM c'est dans /etc/gdm/Init/Default
ils préconisent de mettre les commandes xrandr
AVANT la ligne initctl -q emit login-session-start


mais j'avais envie de tester les reliquats de fichier conf
en m'appuyant sur divers post et sur cette recap des options de section
