Le système travaille en tant que root. Les différents logiciels qui sont lancés au démarrage, le logiciel qui vérifie l'intégrité des données, etc. sont lancés par l'utilisateur root.
GNU/Linux, ça désigne le système d'exploitation : le noyau, l'ensemble des logiciels... Ça ne désigne pas un utilisateur. Quand on dit que "le système fait ci ou ça", c'est via l'utilisateur root.

j'ai trouvé ceci sur un site ( je ne sais plus lequel )

Voici un exemple d'un répertoire lost + found /
La grande majorité des fichiers contenus ici sont  des fichiers système endommagés et des fichiers personnels.
Ces fichiers n'ont pas pu être récupérés

Ce qui n'est manifestement pas le cas
