Merci beaucoup pour ce tutorial qui m'a été très utile
Surtout que j'ai du recourir à la 2e solution (AGPGART externe)

j'ai du recourir à la deuxième solution car la commande fgl_glxgears ne fonctionnait pas avec la première solution.

Content de voir que le driver arrive à tourner correctement sur différents types de machines.
Chez moi ça ne tourne malheureusement pas.
J'ai un Asus V6VA20, il s'agit d'un laptop ayant une radeon X600 en PCI-Express avec 64Mo de ram dédiée.
J'ai d'abord voulu essayer d'installer le driver d'ati ubuntu's way, mais je me suis heurté à des pb avec mtrr. Bref, j'ai refais un noyau perso, pour les options impactant directement la carte je me suis basé sur le howto de gentoo : http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers
Il est à noter que ce laptop possède 1Go de ram, j'ai donc activé le high memory support.
Je laisse aussi l'ACPI gérer le PCI.
Le driver ATI compile bien et se lance correctement.
Malheureusement je me mange un écran noir au lancement de X, que ce soit en utilisant AGPGART ou le support AGP interne au driver. Le clavier ne repond plus, la machine reste seulement accessible via SSH.
Il semble que ce soit un pb d'allocation de mémoire, mais je sais pas comment le résoudre

Bon ben, concernant mon problème, je l'ai résolu en limitant la ram système allouée à 512Mo ou 768Mo.
C'est très laid comme méthode, ça me convient pas, mais ça marche.
append="mem=512m" ou 768m dans lilo ou grub.
Y a pas un autre moyen ? je voudrais quand même profiter de mes 1Go de ram

ça marche pour apple aussi? j'ai un Ibook G4.. et je n'ai pas fouillé, mais il me semble qu'il n'y a pas de "restricted-modules"...

Et VLAN.... message d'erreure au boot : Votre carte n'est pas une FireGL ( ben oui!! je sais!! )

Va faire un tour du côté du Wiki, il y a plusieurs manières d'installer des drivers pour les cartes ATI.
Essaie avec l'installeur ATI, et sinon avec le driver libre "Radeon".

J'aimerais surtout de l'aide pour éditer et donc reconfigurer mon xorg.conf .
J'ai tester Nano, Vim, Vi, mais quand je suis dans ces logiciels, je n'arrive meme pas à ouvrir xorg.conf, je ne vois meme pas commenton ouvre quoi que ce soit

Avec ces éditeurs, le plus simple est de les lancer suivis du nom du fichier à ouvrir.
Par exemple:
$ sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
vim est nettement plus puissant que nano mais nécessite un apprentissage assez long, donc je te conseille plutôt nano.
Petite remarque sur la page Ati dans le wiki: j'ai mergé les redondances, mais il reste à corriger le début de la partie "Comment installer l'accélaration 3D sur une carte ATI ?". Elle dit qu'il faut le driver propriétaire pour avoir de la 3D, ce qui est faut (le driver libre radeon supporte aussi l'accélération 3D sur certaines cartes).
L'idéal serait de commencer par une introduction présentant chaque driver, et de continuer avec les 3 parties (fglrx du paquet Ubuntu, radeon, fglrx du site ATI).

Je ne sais pas trop où chercher pour résoudre ce problème, même si le DRI est activé ces résultats sont mitigés.
Est-ce normal? Est-ce que le PCI express pose problème, ie. n'est pas supporté correctemement avec les drivers ATI ou bien le noyau 2.6.10?
Quelqu'un a-t-il déja été confronté à ce genre de configuration?

Une x300 c'est bas de gamme ! comparé a une 9800 pro 256 bits l'equivalent serait une bonne x700 en terme de puissance pas en instruction shader pixel shader etc...
Sinon c'est vrai que c'est bas ! ton kernel c'est un i686 ? regarde bien s'il trouve la meme puissance parce que moi avec un kernel de i386 ca me limiter ma ram a 885 ! mais quand jai mis un k7 pour athlon/duron hop 1024 m'enfin c'est peut etre des petit truc comme ca quoi...
Bon je vais me mettre à installer un driver ati pour ma 9800 pro c'est pas gagné !!!

Mais je n'ai pas encore modifier mon kernel pour passer d'un I386 à I686 et ainsi avoir les gestion de mes 2Go de mémoire qui me donnera peut etre un peu plus de punch

Mon noyau est bien un i686, j'ai essayé la toute dernière version des driver ATI et j'obtiens le même résultat, à noter que lorsque je lance l'outil d'ATI, mon device mode est PCI et non AGP (ce qui est normal puisque c'est du PCI Express mais j'aurais quand même aimé voir PCI-E ou qqc comme ça).
Peut-être est-ce le chipset 945G qui n'est pas supporté correctement avec le 2.6.10
